Dear Dennis Evans,
As we enter April, the winter cold seems
to have abated here in New England. Rain
and wind are the weather constants,
making a perfect reason to watch a film
in a warm, comfortable theatre, or curl
up on a couch and put in a DVD at home.
Entries continue to be coming in ahead
of last year and we have seen a nice
surge in screenplay submissions. Our
KidsEye Summer Filmmaking Camp is about
half full and we will be welcoming on
board new staff to work with Keith Brown
our Program Director. It's a busy April
as this newsletter will attest. Come and
join us for some wonderful programming!
Finally, the Board and staff want to
offer our sincere condolences to the
family and friends of Agavne (Norigian)
Berberian. Born in Palou-Nerkhi,
Armenia, she was the daughter of the
late Khachadoor and Shooshan (Aramian)
Norigian. Mrs. Berberian was a survivor
of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. She
was the devoted mother of Sarkis 'Jon'
Berberian and his wife Elizabeth of
Providence, (owners of the Columbus
Theatre Arts Center), Hapet A. Berberian
and his wife Stephanie of Wellesley, MA,
and Lillian Klanian and her husband
Peter of East Greenwich; loving
grandmother of eleven; loving
great-grandmother of six; dear sister of
Michael Norigian of Cranston and the
late Robert Norigian; and loving aunt of
many nieces and nephews. She was 97 and
will be greatly missed!

Author Scott Heim introduces his
latest work and speaks about
screen adaptations
From Fiction to Film: Journeys
in Imagined Lands. What are the
sparks that ignite the flames of
imagine? How does one adapt an
internal dialogue to the broader
realm of the stage and cinema?
Learn firsthand from author
Scott Heim, who won fellowships
to the London Arts Board as
their International Writer-
in-Residence, and to the
Sundance Screenwriters Lab. His
acclaimed first novel
"Mysterious Skin" was adapted
for the stage, premiering in San
Francisco; and was subsequently
adapted to film by director
Gregg Araki and Antidote Films.
Tonight, Scott will introduce
and read from his new novel "We
Disappear;" a fascinating
psychological thriller that
tackles questions of identity,
illness and trauma. Scott will
also answer questions about
seeing his work made into a
feature film and the journey
that entailed.
Featuring author/filmmaker,
Edward Delaney and hosted by
Adam Short, RIIFF's Producing
Director.

Acclaimed Film by Oscar Nominee,
Adrian Belic, to be Given a
Special Preview Screening at the
2008 Roving Eye Documentary Film
Festival
Ed Artis, James Laws and Walt
Ratterman are three middle-aged

taking desperately needed food
and medicine to communities
devastated by natural disasters
and plagued by war. In 1995,
they formed Knightsbridge
International, a unique
humanitarian aid organization,
whose motto is 'High Adventure
and Service to Humanity.' Artis
explains: 'We're not there to
change anybody's politics, we're
not in the God business, and we
pay our own way.' As Laws tells
it simply, "We do what we can,
when we can, because we can."
These former soldiers and modern
day knights travel the world
delivering life saving
humanitarian aid directly into
the hands of civilians in some
of the most dangerous yet
beautiful places on Earth.
Winner of thirty awards, this

|
|
Open Call for the 12th Annual
RIIFF is ongoing through June
1st
The Rhode Island International
Film Festival for independent
film and video, is calling for
entries to its 12th Anniversary
Festival. The Festival will take
place August 5-10, 2008 in the
capital city, Providence and
throughout scenic Rhode Island.
Of special note is that the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences has elected to
recognize the Rhode Island
International Film Festival as a
qualifying festival for the
Short Films category for the
Annual Academy Awards. With more
than 6,000 film festivals
worldwide, only 61 have this
recognition.
The Festival is accepting shorts
as well as feature- length films
and videos. Films and videos
must have been produced after
2004. The Rhode Island
International Film Festival is
one of only five broadly
focused, independent festivals
in New England accepting works
of any type (dramatic,
documentary, experimental,
animation), on any subject
matter, and in any genre.
Filmmakers may enter their films
either in competition or out of
competition. Films in
competition will be judged by a
jury of distinguished industry
professionals, peers and film
fans. Whether in or out of
competition, all films will be
eligible for Audience Fest
Favorites awards (The Viola M.
Marshall Awards).
The Festival offers an artistic
exchange as well as
opportunities for the global
creative community that are not
available in the established
entertainment industry. It is
designed to foster contact among
film directors, producers,
distributors, backers and
audiences.

KidsEye Summer Filmmaking
Camp Enters its 10th Year!
|
|
Spaces are still available for
this year's program
KidsEye is a fun yet intensive
five-day filmmaking camp for
children ages 8-16 presented by
the Rhode Island International
Film Festival. Over the course
of the last few years, the camp
has expanded, allowing children
to learn more about what it
takes to make a movie. We strive
to incorporate as much hands-on
learning as possible, therefore
placing our focus primarily on
production. KidsEye participants
step into the roles of
screenwriters, actors, directors
and crew, and learn the
importance of working as a team.
This summer the KidsEye camp
will take place July 7-11, 2008.
During the first two days
participants will attend
pre-production workshops on
screenwriting, storyboarding,
acting, directing and production
design. Then participants will
apply what they have learned in
the production of their group's
short film. If time allows,
participants will also have the
opportunity to partake in the
editing process.
Registration is $340 which
includes a copy of the finished
films and the official KidsEye
T-shirt. Plus, participants
receive access passes to RIIFF
main events, including the
annual KidsEye International
Film Festival and to the opening
night of the Annual RI
International Horror Festival in
October. And wait, there's more!
The film that the children shoot
will be screened for family and
friends at a specially arranged
screening called the "Red Carpet
Premiere."
